“Mr. Jerome Hopkins gave the fifth concert of the Orpheon season last night before a very large audience. He had some excellent support on the stage. [Lists performers.] Part second of said programme consisted of a ‘humorous parlor sketch,’ which in our humble estimation was the most ridiculous, childish and disgraceful affair we have ever witness in public. The two persons who took part in it were announced as Convent Garden and Crystal Palace stars; but a more contemptible or degrading spectacle on the concert or theatrical stage has seldom been inflicted on the public. This ‘humorous parlor sketch’ is calculated to bring the laudable purpose of these concerts into disrepute, and the manager of this magnificent hall should not permit it to be made a place for buffoonery and a ridiculous exhibition.”
