“‘St. Patrick was a gentleman’ and left to his people a spirit of devotion to the ladies worthy their patron saint. Accordingly, if the mighty multitude of admiring men at Niblo’s last night were an extraordinary event, it might have been set down to the spirit of St. Patrick, and to his disciples who held possession of the metropolis during the day. But as the ‘White Fawn,’ like the ‘Black Crook,’ always fills the house, rain or shine, spring, summer, fall or winter, holiday or no holiday, the great attraction at Niblo’s last night must be set down to something else than St. Patrick, although his inspiring presence was visible throughout the house.”
