“The Theatre Comique re-opened on March 23d as a regular variety theatre, with the following company:—Charley White, Lew Brimmer, Tommy Ryan, Mlle. Helene, Lizzie Whelpley, Dan Collins, Dave Hawley, Josh Hart, Laura Le Claire, Lottie La Point, and a corps de ballet under the direction of George W. Smith. Mr. Collins’ characteristic song of the ‘Happy Old Man’ was a most excellent performance. His make-up for a man three score and ten was equal to anything of the kind we have ever seen; his tottering step, voice and every action were just what he was supposed to represent. Mr. Collins has made a specialty of this character, and he deserved the hearty applause that was bestowed upon him. The balance of the entertainment appeared to please all present, particularly Charley White’s Ethiopian eccentricities, Helene’s dancing and Brimmer’s banjoic musings.”
