Review: New York Post, 18 December 1862, 3.

To-day at noon a pleasant musical rehearsal occurred at Trinity, the choristers of the church, under Mr. Cutler, uniting with the choir of St. George’s, Flushing, under Mr. Frank Gilder. …

These choirs had never met before, but they took up and sang with admirable effect a programme including chants, chorals, [etc.].

. . . The choristers occupied seats in the pews on each side of the middle aisle near the front porch of the church, while the solo singers were in the organ loft.  Perhaps the gem of the pleasing rehearsal was the Mendelssohn trio, sung without accompaniment and listened to with the utmost silent attention by the audience who filled the church.

The Hallelujah chorus was taken rather slower than usual, but was admirably sung by the young singers, who came always in at the right time – which is more than can be said of many grown-up people who attempt Handel.

This ‘union of choirs,’ was interesting to the lover of church music, as showing that the cathedral style of singing of the English church is practicable here; and for this proof we are indebted to the skilful organist and choir-trainers, Messrs. Cutler and Golder, one of whom has made the music of Trinity worthy what is practically our Cathedral, while the other has given to a village church a musical reputation which few city churches enjoy.”
