“Of the giving of miscellaneous concerts, as of the making of books, there is no end. They are mostly of a personal and direct character, appealing to the clientele of the giver. These performances are generally tame, but genial—the reciprocity between the player and the audience being perfect. We can refer only to such as were somewhat out of the beaten track. Mr. Jerome Hopkins’ ‘Hours with the Piano,’ in aid of the Orpheon Free Choral School Fund, were carefully prepared illustrations of various schools of pianoforte music. The gentleman’s energy and enthusiasm have placed him prominently before the public. We think, however, that he is heard to better advantage as a composer than as a pianist. In the matter of playing we have reached the highest point of the art.”
