“The first of the rehearsals for the second concert took place yesterday afternoon at the Academy. The programme is one that finely contrasts the old and the new schools, a Haydn symphony and an overture by Catel, of the former, being played, and a symphonic poem by Liszt, of the latter. Haydn’s work is of course beautiful and melodious. The overture by Catel is a French composition, after the manner of Gluck. Catel was an admirable harmonist, as this work shows a conscientious artist and a man of real ability. The Liszt symphony is an interesting work, easier of comprehension than the Berlioz frenzy that we had at the last concert, and replete with the mannerisms that characterize the composer. The audience at the rehearsal was a very large one.”
