“The announcement of the Philharmonic Society for the winter season is published. The orchestra, which is to remain under the able direction of Mr. Bergmann, will, as last year, contain a hundred performers. Madame Parepa-Rosa, Camilla Urso, Ole Bull, and Mr. S. B. Mills have been engaged as soloists.”
“The Philharmonic Society will give no fewer than six concerts and eighteen public rehearsals this season, under the leadership of Mr. Carl Bergmann, and with the full force of 100 instruments. The solo performers are to be Madame Rosa, Madame Camilla Urso, Ole Bull, and Mr. Mills, and we are promised a magnificent rendering of Schumann’s ‘Manfred’ (of which we had the overture last Winter), Edwin Booth declaiming the leading part of the text, and the Liederkranz singing the choruses. This is a noble example of enterprise, which we trust may be suitably rewearded.”
