“The smaller of the Steinway Halls was crowded last evening on occasion of the annual concert of Mrs. Anna Payne. It was one of the most enjoyable and satisfactory concerts we have listened to for some time, inasmuch as the programme was well selected and Mrs. Payne’s assistants were unexceptionable. Mrs. Cruger showed a cultivated soprano voice, of considerable sweetness, which was heard to advantage in the trio finale from ‘Trovatore,’ in which also the gypsy’s wailing song was [well?] given by Mrs. Payne. Pattison dashed off his brilliant ‘Polka de Concert’ and Prudent’s ‘Firefly’ in his own masterly style, and Mr. William Legrat sang two beautiful solos, ‘The Image of the Rose’ and one of Gottschalk’s songs, in a manner that indicated the true artist. His fresh, clear, and well-trained tenor voice should be heard more frequently in concert. William Berg was the conductor, and one whose accompaniment would delight any artist.”
