“It is just such places as this that cheat the doctor and diminish the revenue of the drug store. Just such a little temple of Momus as this of Tony Pastor’s does more for the sanitary welfare of the east side of town than the Medical College or the Board of Health perhaps. Last evening a great, long, varied bill of fare was provided for the habitués of this favorite resort, and given to them in small, side-splitting doses that made the entire the very realization of merry sweetness long drawn out. ‘Three Strings to One Beau’ brought an irrepressible and mischievous nigger into conflict with his woolly-headed ‘patient’ and a broad brimmed Quaker and a fop dressed in rainbow chintz, and after knocking all their empty heads together he falls into a barrel of molasses, amid aching roars of laughter from the audience. Then follows a whole series of side dishes—dancing, solo songs, gymnastics, and so on, winding up with a solid porterhouse steak drama called ‘The Yankee Farmer,’ a singular combination, full of wise saws and modern instances and running over with a creamy flood of jokes.”
