Review: New-York Times, 30 November 1868, 4.

“Mr. MARETZEK’S brief season came to an end on Saturday, when a highly successful and good performance of ‘Les Vespres Siciliennes’ was given. In two weeks Mr. MARETZEK has given here and in Brooklyn no fewer than fourteen representations, and in a general way they have been even and satisfactory. He has lacked an artiste of strong personal attractiveness—but, the distribution of his operas, nevertheless, has been judicious and good. We hear that it is his intention to return in February and to commence a longer and better organized campaign. He is sufficiently encouraged—if not enriched—to think that there is yet an opening and an opportunity for Italian opera.”

Review: Dwight's Journal of Music, 05 December 1868, 358.

“It will be observed that during the fortnight’s campaign six of Verdi’s works were performed, while only one of Mozart’s had that honor.”
