“For some months past the little company of vocalists who are under the baton of Mr. William Berge have been winning for themselves a reputation in musical circles which is in every way creditable. They sing with precision and effect; and at their public concerts—to which, however, they do not give enough publicity—their performances are such as to make older and larger vocal societies fear for their supremacy. On Tuesday night the Berge Choral Union gave a concert at Trenor’s Lyric Hall. The programme included the oratorio of ‘Job,’by Dr. Chipp, an English church composer of some note, and man of masterly musical attainments. In this work, Miss Lizzie Allen, soprano, and Mr. William Legget, tenor, took the leading parts in a satisfactory manner, and the choruses—especially the concluding fugue—were much admired. The second part of the programme consisted of selections from Berge, Guglielmo, and Marchetti, which were well rendered and warmly applauded by au audience that quite filled the large hall.”
