“At the Fifth Avenue Theatre Irma will sing to-night in ‘Barbe Bleue,’ and Tuesday night in ‘Perichole.’ On Wednesday the Irma-Aujac troupe will give a ‘Perichole’ matinée in Brooklyn. The reign of this band of operatic artists will also soon be over. It is stated that Mr. Augustine Daly, the dramatist, has engaged the Fifth Avenue Theatre for the fall season, to give a series of light dramatic entertainments. It would seem from all this that opera bouffe will soon be in this city completely a thing of the past. The semi-nude spectacular burlesque which is just now so flourishing could be much more easily spared.”
“‘The Hermit’s Bell’ no longer sounds at this establishment, the management having fallen back upon two of the most popular operas in the repertory of Mr. Fisk’s company—‘Barbe Bleue’ and ‘La Périchole’—which are to be repeated alternatively every evening this week.”
“At the matinée on Saturday ‘Perichole’ met the usual success; and it will be played again to-night at the French Theatre, with the Morlacchi troupe in the ballet. When opera bouffe in New York becomes only a tradition of past fashion, ‘La Perichole’ will be remembered as one of the operas that justified the great popularity of the system.”
