Review: New York Herald, 14 September 1869, 3.

“The popularity which this troupe has for years enjoyed here appears to be on the increase. The little establishment in which they hold their nightly ‘trouble’ was last evening filled with a most fashionable audience. Several distinguished lights of the theatrical profession were among those who witnessed the antics of Birch, Backus and Bernard, and sat entranced under the influence of the ‘vocal velvet voiced’ Wambold. The many anecdotes which Backus had to tell about Europe, relative to his ‘nine dollars’ worth of Waterloo,’ and how he saved Bernard’s life on Mont Blanc, when that delicate and fragile gentleman made the rash attempt to ‘shin up’ a precipitous peak, were told in so marvelous a manner that they won pitying shrieks of cruel laughter from the auditors. To enumerate other features of the programme at this house is unnecessary. Suffice to say that the bill presented is as good as this excellent troupe can furnish.”
