“The two minstrel companies at present performing in this city are doing the best business of any place of amusement here. The San Francisco and Bryants’ have both been well filled during the past two weeks, and on many occasions there has not been standing room at either place. The two London importations, Leggett and Allen, with the San Francisco party, please their audiences, more on account of the novelty of seeing them in Polish costume and dancing on pedestals than for their artistic movements. They please and are encored each evening, and the dance they do for their encore pleases better than their first one. Johnny Queen did the act of the ‘Street Sweeper,’ in which he appears in the black statues. The olio was replete with good things, and all the funny fellows of the troupe appear in laughable acts. The first part was quite attractive the past week, for David Wambold, J. F. Oberist and C. K. Shattuck sang new songs.”
