“The performances of the Richings Opera Troupe, which have attracted to the Grand Opera House audiences that have filled it every night since the season was commenced. Brought before the public yesterday ‘La Sonnambula.’ Although a representation by artists of the same company was being given simultaneously in Brooklyn, there was a sufficiency remaining for the acceptable interpretation of BELLINI’S charming work. Mrs. RICHINGS-BERNARD naturally sang Amina, while Mrs. MOZART was Lisa, Mr. BROOKHOUSE BOWLER Elvino, and Mr. J. H. SUTCLIFFE Count Rudolpho. The efforts of the three artists first named call for no special comment, though we may note that recent renderings of the same parts were decidedly more sympathetic. Mr. SUTCLIFFE, who is referred to as an English baritone, intent on a first and only appearance, commanded attention by a voice of remarkable tremulousness and a uniform as much in harmony with requirements as would have been the dress of the Swiss Admiral in OFFENBACH’S ‘Vie Parisienne.’ Spite of its merits, a more interesting representation, we are sure, can be looked for this night, when the ‘Bohemian Girl’ will be given.”
