“Mr. Bateman, who introduced the bouffe operatic matinees into this country, has sold out to Mr. Fisk, of Pike’s Opera House, and the public, without doubt, will be the gainers by the change.” That is followed by an imaginary street dialogue between two “boot blacks.” One of them tells the other that he goes now to the opera bouffe instead of Tony Pastor; the fun is now in the French opera. Later, the article praises the creation of the Grand Opera House (“We now have our Grand Opera House, like the great metropolitan cities in Europe”).
