“There was a large audience assembled last evening within the cosey little hall wherein these dusky disciples of Momus nightly hold forth to their delighted patrons. The mere fact of the great Sachem next door dancing and stamping over their heads destroys not their equilibrium, but, on the contrary, appears to increase their popularity. In addition to the burnt cork, opera bouffe of ‘Il True-Bad-Doer,’ which embraces the full strength of the entire company and which is nightly received with unfeigned delight by large audiences, the Bryants this week offer an excellent musical olio, besides several Ethiopian sketches of an irresistibly funny character, not the least of which is the famous song of the “Gendarmes,’ by Nelse Seymour and Dan Bryant. Their make up, though a burlesque upon the original, is exceedingly clever and never fails to receive a well-merited encore. Dan, as Pitou, is drollery itself, and his actions, facial expressisons and singing are so decidedly comical as to be almost a senjoyable as his model in ‘Genevieve.’ Unsworth’s banjo songs are something which are now heard but seldom in metropolitan minstrel halls and are always received by those who are so fortunate as to hear them with evident feelings of delight. ‘Jack Sheppard’ and ‘Pompey’s Blunders,’ two excruciating sketches, are also upon the bills for this week.”
