“The American Conservatory of Music, of which Mr. H. Schroeder is director, gave a musical soiree at this hall last evening. The audience was very large and the programme interesting. Three very excellent artists assisted the pupils in carrying out this programme. Messrs. Von Inten and Bussmeyer, pianists, and Mr. Feininger, violinist, showed in their playing considerable artistic skill and ability. The first of these gentlemen plays with neatness and thorough appreciation of the spirit of the composer, but his touch is weak and in the forte passages sluggish and without crispness. Some of the pupils showed evidences of good schooling, especially Miss Bassie, Miss Treusch and Mrs. Jansen, the two first at the piano and the last lady as a mezzo soprano singer. She has a very fine natural voice, and with a little more training in the art of proper and distinct intonation she will be acceptable to the public. The only drawback to the concert was the singing of an air from the ‘Freyschutz’ by Mr. Max Moll, at whose hands Weber suffered considerably.”
