“Thursday night to Mrs. Anna Payne’s concert at Hall of Young Men’s Christian Association. Pharisaical young men, judging by their name, but they have a handsome concert room. Music was ‘common doings.’ It’s an evangelical clubhouse, & will do a certain amount of good among young clerks from the country & ‘sitch.’ If it would condescend to open a smoking room & introduce a few barrels of ale lager, it would do twice as much good.”
