“The past week at the Academy of Music has been abundantly spiced with variety, for six different operas have been presented, and all of them, except ‘Fra Diavolo,’ have drawn good houses. When the ‘Marriage of Figaro’ was sung on Friday night, though there were vacancies as usual in the stockholders’ places, the rest of the auditorium was crowded; that desolate topmost row of boxes—the ‘flirtation boxes’—was filled, and in the passages down stairs even ladies were left standing. After this we hope to hear no more of the horrible slander upon the taste of New-York, that our people cannot love Mozart, and cannot relish one of the loveliest operas ever written. Madame Rosa was as full of voice and vitality as ever. Miss Hersee and Mr. Campbell, who had been ailing, were decidedly better, and Mrs. Seguin was charming, as she always is.”
