“The spring tide festival of the Orpheonists, which comes off on the 19th at the Academy of music [sic], is this year receiving more than its usual share of attention from the patrons of music. Mr. Jerome Hopkins, whose devotion to this form of music and to the cause of educational music, generally entitles him to the esteem of all who know what a thankless task it is—is working assiduously as ever, and has succeeded this year in securing several special features which will attract the attention of the cultivated public. Among these is a National hymn, composed by a well known lady of this city, and which will be sung by a full chorus.”

“The fifth Spring-tide festival of the Orpheon Society’s free schools was held yesterday afternoon and evening, at the Academy of Music. The house was filled, and great satisfaction was expressed at the entertainment, which had real merits in respect of variety and of earnestness of purpose on the part of the executants. The principal soloists were [lists performers]. In the afternoon ‘The War Song of the Christian Soldier,’ words and music by Rev. J. H. Hopkins, and ‘When he Told Me,’ song and chorus, with music by Mr. Jerome Hopkins; and a ‘Psalm for the Union,’ composed by Mr. H. W. Hills, were new and conspicuous features of the bills. In the evening, religious music was sung in vast quantities, and a fresh gallop, ‘The Lotos Club,’ decidedly entrainant, in rhythm and noticeable for sprightly and elaborate instrumentation, was rendered, as was most of the music, under the direction of its composer, Mr. Jerome Hopkins. The success of the latest Spring-tide festival offers renewed assurance that Mr. Hopkins’ generous labors have not been fruitless, and that the fact has abundant recognition from all.”

“The fifth Spring-Tide singing festival of the Orpheon Society’s free choir-schools was held yesterday afternoon and evening, at the New-York Academy of Music, under the direction of Jerome Hopkins. In the afternoon the audience was small, but in the evening the Academy was very well filled, the applause was frequent, and several of the performers were recalled. The entire programme included 24 pieces, vocal and instrumental, embracing selections from Wagner, Donizetti, Mendelssohn, Handel, Mozart, and others.” Lists committee members.

“The last springtide singing festival of the Orpheon Society, under the direction of Mr. Hopkins, at the Academy, was one of the best ever given by that large and well managed body.”
