“…The great mass of visitors converged at the Mall so as to hear the splendid music of Grafulla’s incomparable band.

“From the time the concert began, at half-past three o’clock, till nearly six o’clock, when it ended, there was a perfect jam here. Every seat under the various marquees surrounding the music stand was filled and crowds were seated on the grass, and the spacious graveled walks were a solid mass of moving people…

“As for the music, no words can describe the fine execution of the band or the pleasure of listening to its magnificent playing. The programme was as follows, and, as will be seen, embraced a select and pleasing variety:—[Lists program].”

Review: New-York Times, 05 June 1870, 3.

“…About 2 P. M. the crowds began to concentrate upon the mall and the terrace, and by 3½ P. M., the time for the concert to commence, not less than 4,000 people had congregated under the awnings around the musicians’ stand, upon the lawn and in the arbor by the Casino…

“The concert on the Mall yesterday afternoon comprised selections from Mozart, Weber, Wagner, Offenbach, Balfe, Strauss, and others, all of which were performed to the satisfaction and delight of the immense audience in attendance. They will be repeated every Saturday afternoon, when the weather permits, during the season.”
