“Am just from C. M. A. rehearsal. Mass from Credo to end of Hosanna, & the little Preciosa choruses. Mme. Anna Bishop attended &, though catarrhal, sang her little solo passages very artistically. As she must be near sixty, her voice is not very fresh, but her execution is beautiful. The charming game-flavored Preciosa music was sung incoherently, on this first trial, but it was good to hear—especially my special pet & delight ‘Es blinken so freundlich die Sterne’ which I have loved dearly ever since the spring of 1831 when Eloise [Lloyd Strong Derby, his half-sister, who now lives in Boston] used to sing its melody arranged as a ballad—something about a ‘Sicilian knight.’”
