“PHILHARMONIC REHEARSAL—A very full and fashionable house attended the first public rehearsal for the second concert of the Philharmonic Society at the Academy of Music on Friday afternoon. Irving Place was filled with private equipages, and elegant toilets were in abundance. The programme for the second concert comprises [gives names of pieces]. An attractive and varied bill, truly one calculated to give satisfaction to the musical public of the metropolis. With such magnificent materials at their command, the society should never permit the foolish idea of any of their members to frame programmes like that of the first concert, which gave general dissatisfaction, and tended to throw serious obstacles in the way of those pioneers of art. As we have said, the three works of Cherubini, Mendelssohn and Rubenstein represent three entirely distinct schools of music, and are well chosen. Fragments of works and hackneyed overtures, like that of ‘Tannhauser’ and the Schubert symphony, are by no means satisfactory for a Philharmonic concert. At the extra concert, which will be given on Beethoven’s birthday, about the middle of this month, in which the programme will be entirely made up of the immortal composer’s works, Marie Krebs, the talented young pianist, who has lately come among us, will play on this occasion.”
