“‘La Grande Duchess’ continues to attract considerable audiences. Monday night the whole of the powerful cast in this celebrated opera did their utmost to amuse the company present. Celine Montaland as the Grand Duchess was especially successful, and drew forth repeated applause from the audience, while M. Gausins as Fritz, and M. Hillemans as Prince Paul, gave general satisfaction. M. Varlet, M. Duchesne and M. Valter as Baron Puck, General Boum and Baron Grog, respectively, created considerable amusement by their drollery and witticisms.

On Saturday night, after the representation of ‘La Grand Duchess,’ James Fisk, Jr., presented Carlo Patti, the conductor of the orchestra, with a magnificent conductor’s baton, of the finest black ebony, with massive gold tips, the one representing a roll of music, the other bearing the inscription—‘Presented to Carlo Patti, with compliments of James Fisk, Jr.’ This splendid souvenir, valued at $500, is very elegantly and elaborately chased and is gotten up in the most artistic style.”

“Of the respective merits of these performances we have hitherto spoken at length, and we need only add that Mlle. Montaland’s personation of the Duchess seems to improve with each representation and she appears to have caught the true spirit of the character.”
