“Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon with Ellie was unusually satisfying. First was the delicious Mendelssohn symphony. Then nice Miss Marie Krebs sang the Freyschütz scena, very nicely, considering that she has no remarkable amount of power, & afterwards Dachauer’s setting of poor Gretchen’s song in Faust. Remarkable that so accomplished a pianist should make a fair show as vocalist too. Then the newly-imported Dr. Leopold Damrosch did Beethoven’s violin concerto in D, op. 6 (three movements) most brilliantly. The orchestral work fully worthy of the composer. The performer introduced a ‘cadenza’ of his own, creditable to his manipulation, disgraceful to him as an artist. Who is worthy to append a bit of his own writing to a composition of Beethoven’s? Overture to Idomeneo—also Berlioz’s eructation styled 'Carnival Romain.' Mrs. D’Oremieulx with us—also her nice young Leon, just returned from his school at Meiningen.”
“There was a great crowd yesterday afternoon at the Philharmonic rehearsal—the last of the present season. Dr. Damrosch gave a splendid interpretation of Beethoven’s violin concerto, and Miss Krebs made her debut as a vocalist, singing the well-known prayer from ‘Der Freyschütz’ and a scena by Mr. Louis Dachauer. We reserve our criticisms until after the concert, only adding that the performance this evening promises to make a brilliant and interesting close to a most satisfactory season. The playing of the Scotch symphony of Mendelssohn yesterday was admirable.”
