“Yesterday was quite a gala day. The arrangements at the music stand are excellent. There are chairs and benches in abundance, and temporary awnings have been spread over them as a needed shelter from the perils of a July sun. All around the band, for a couple of pleasant hours, thousands of people stroll, and flirt and make themselves happy, occasionally dropping into the cool saloon beneath the grand stone stairway that leads to the Lake to indulge in a water ice or a sherry cobbler. The music was very good, and the programme was made up principally of selections from popular and simple operas, whose music is familiar to all, like ‘Figlia del Regimento.’”
