“A very interesting musical soirée was given at the Union League Theatre last evening for the benefit of the above deserving institution. The artists were [see above]. The programme comprised selections from Schumann, Vieuxtemps, Rivarde, Bergner, Rossini, Gounod, Thomas, Liszt and Poznanski. The principal feature was the brilliant rendering of Liszt’s transcription of the polonaise from ‘Puritani’ by Mr. Vilanova, who on this occasion fairly surpassed himself and surprised even his admirers, and their name is legion. He invests Liszt with a peculiar grace and poetry entirely his own, and yet loses nothing of the nervous power that characterizes that composer’s piano works. Again in the grand duo for violin and piano, the handiwork of Vieuxtemps and Wolff, he shared with Mr. Poznanski the honors of a true artistic rendition. The other artists also acquitted themselves creditably and won deserved applause. The audience was of the usual large and fashionable kind that this little theatre is so famous for, and quite a handsome sum was realized for the Hahnemann Hospital.”
