: Strong, George Templeton. New-York Historical Society. The Diaries of George Templeton Strong, 1863-1869: Musical Excerpts from the MSs, transcribed by Mary Simonson. ed. by Christopher Bruhn., 06 January 1871.

“At the Philharmonic rehearsal [at the Academy of Music] we had Cherubini & the Mendelssohn overtures, which improve on acquaintance, & the Rubinstein symphony, which does not. Richard Hoffman played a lovely piano concerto of Beethoven’s (C minor, op. 37) & a barcarole by Sterndale Bennett—quite pretty. Mrs. Fanny Harkin & her little daughter, Mrs. Georgey Peters, Mrs. Harrison, & Diccon [Richard Henry Derby] were in our box.

Temple [Strong’s middle son] began the violin under Matzka today, with much avidity & enthusiasm. He will probably cool down a little under the initial drudgery.”
