“Philharmonic rehearsal, 2 ½ p.m.—fourth symphony delicious—so fresh & bright & sparkling: the grand pulsating eruptive crashes of the full orchestra (in second movement) always sinking back into the quiet melody that forms its subject, all amazingly lovely. So are the lights & shadows of the first Allegro. What a contrast to Liszt’s laborious bombast. Then that most precious little trio of the 3rd movement, that contrasts so charmingly with its intensely Beethovenesque setting—no trio is so exquisitely individual & refined unless it may be that of the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony.”
