“The east side houses of amusement do not seem to be affected like their unpretentious rivals by the state of the weather. At Tony Pastor’s last night the audience was far in advance of the usual numerical strength. After the variety business of the first part the poem of ‘Beautiful Snow’ was illustrated in a dramatic sketch. Mr. Pastor played the heartless deceiver in a very good-natured manner. In the second dramatic sketch Mr. Carleton threw some exquisite touches of pathos into his Irish ballads. It is to be regretted that something a little less aged than those songs he sang last night could not be found in this city for him. Miss Jenny Gilmer is a piquant graceful chambermaid; the present state of her voice must be a great infliction to her. The attraction of the evening, however, seemed to be in the last piece, which was evidently concocted for the two fighting men who figured in it, Barney Aaron and Arthur Chambers. After some excellent sparring on both sides Donnelly won the battle, as in duty [illegible] according to history, and the performance closed with his achievement.”
