“Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon. Mrs. Gulager, Mrs. D’Oremieulx, Mrs. Thorndyke sat with us. There is vigor in Bargiel’s overture (Medea) & in the second movement of Schumann’s E-flat symphony, but it will be a second rate concert, though Miss Kellogg is to sing for us, & charge us $350.00 for the favor. I fear she is a somewhat rapacious young prima donna.”

Review: New York Herald, 18 February 1871, 5.

“The lower part of the Academy was pretty well filled at the first rehearsal yesterday afternoon, but there were very few in the boxes. The two overtures are extremely difficult, and Bergmann will have considerable work in getting his orchestra to give a fair interpretation of them. The programme, in which the names of these works were printed, consisted, as usual, of a small strip of paper, on the back of which was a warning to those who enter the house during the actual performance of the music.”
