“The Academy of Music, thanks to the admirable system of management inaugurated by Professor Doremus last season, was again crowded yesterday afternoon at the Philharmonic rehearsal. The former president, whose name we have just mentioned, brought the society up from the very dregs of bankruptcy, where Mr. Scharfenberg had left it. He removed it from Steinway Hall to the Academy of Music, increased the orchestra to 100 musicians, and used all his large influence in society to gain subscribers. Him alone can the Philharmonic musicians thank for their large subscription this season. The programme for the next concert consists of [see above]. The principal, and we might say only, attraction at this concert will be the peerless American prima donna, Miss Clara Louise Kellogg. She will sing [see above]. Her sweet, cultivated voice will be a relief from bass clarionets and dreary violoncelli.”
