“The great German tenor gave last night the highest evidence of his popularity by attracting to this theatre the largest house ever known within its walls. The opera was ‘The Postilion of Lonjumeau,’ of which we have already given our opinion. Whatever may be the opinion of musicians and critics concerning the utter worthlessness of this opera and the mere sensational singing of the tenor, one thing is certain, and that is that the receipts last night exceeded $3,300. This is a sufficient reply to the question of popularity, and there is no doubt that never before did an operatic artist receive such an undeniable recognition from the hands of the public of his great talents.”
