“Mrs. Moulton closed her first series of concerts with a matinée on Saturday. The most brilliant audiences, most copious flower-baskets, and the most enthusiastic applause have encouraged her thus far in the arduous career she has [at?]tempted. Every appearance has been a fresh personal triumph. With repeated success she has gained new confidence, and with increase of confidence she has shown more fully the fineness of her culture and the abundance of her natural endowments. Her principal pieces on Saturday were [lists program]. All these suited her, but the first was by far the most effective. We can only say of it, as we said once before, that it was an exquisite specimen of vocalization, and a wonderful exhibition of the lady’s rare voice. No word of praise that we have given Mrs. Moulton needs to be withdrawn or qualified; and if we hesitate to assign her that high rank among artists which is claimed for her by her most enthusiastic admirers, it is because the great singer needs something more than voice and culture, something beyond a merely intellectual appreciation of artistic effects. We do not look to the drawing room for dramatic fire or deep feeling. These are not found in Mrs. Moulton. She has her own place in which, if not great, she is brilliant, fascinating, unrivaled.”
