“That scurrilous donkey Jerome Hopkins inflicts a compliment on me in his last ‘Orpheonist,’ a dirty little monthly or fortnightly sheet, gratuitously distributed & supported by advertising quackery under the form of ‘Editorial notices.’ He talks (apropos of the Philharmonic Society) of my quiet ‘puissance’ & ‘electrical influence’—the jackass! I must have got into a false position somehow, to receive a patronizing notice from this little snob, or squirt.”

“Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon with Ellie, who was fighting a sick headache, to which she had to succumb as soon as she got home. Miss Margaret Taylor, General Vinton, Diccon [Richard Henry Derby], Mrs. Kearney Warren, Mrs. Sidney DeKay, etc., in our box. The last named lady an uncommonly intelligent & appreciative auditor of music. She is a daughter of Craven’s.”

“The stormy weather diminished perceptibly the attendance at the rehearsal for the first Philharmonic Concert of the season, held at the Academy Friday afternoon. The orchestra of the Society was alone engaged in the performance. It interpreted Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, the overture to Wagner’s ‘Meistersinger,’ and Schumann’s overture of ‘Julius Casear.’”
