“Philharmonic rehearsal: Ellie, Lucy [Derby, his niece], Mr. & Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Clason, little Louis [his son], Herr Pruckner, Lazarus, General Vinton, etc., in our box. Overture to Euryanthe, Haydn’s symphony, G major, most hopeful & sunshiny (like our little Lucy expressed in the language of music), second & 4th movements especially delicious. Raff’s Im Walde. Most elaborate & thoughtful, but I do not yet feel able to criticize it. After rehearsal took Mrs. Brown downstairs & she sang the Oberon scena. I thought she did it very well, but my more intelligent & critical colleagues evidently think her unequal to it. Sorry for this nice woman’s probable severe disappointment. But I will not try to force vocalists on the Philharmonic Society. Our true course is to dispense with them altogether.”
