“Philharmonic rehearsal this p.m. with dear Lucy [Derby, Strong’s niece], William Schemerhorn, etc. The Raff symphony grows on one. But how infinitely below good honest old Joseph Haydn (Haydn in G) in freshness, 'spontaneity,' geniality, & inspiration! It is like a volume of Robert Browning after Shakespeare’s songs, or Milton’s Allegro & Penseroso. Note Haydn’s slow movement & his lovely finale. Why does nobody write phrases like the opening of that finale anymore?”
