“Philharmonic rehearsal 2 ½ p.m. With us Mr. & Mrs. D’Oremieulx, General Vinton, Miss Rosalie [Ruggles], Dickon [Richard Henry Derby]. The Schumann symphony is not utterly barren. Its second movement, affectedly entitled a ‘Romanza’ or some such thing is elegant, & the trio in the 3rd movement very pretty indeed. With a single spark of Beethoven’s genius, Schumann would have made quite a respectable Beethoven. The Heinefetter overture seems trash. Beethoven’s overture to Lenore, no. 3, very fine, though it seems (to me, knowing it but little), wanting in breadth, & otherwise open to criticism. Business meeting thereafter, of directors. We have a delicate question to settle with Mr. T. B. Musgrave & Mr. Clarence Seward.”
