“Philharmonic rehearsal yesterday. With me, Mrs. D. Mott, Miss Sally Van Buren, Mrs. Dinsmore, etc. The Schumann symphony (no. 4, D minor) & the Lenore overture grow on one. So does not that cacophonic Heinefetter overture. Two or three very remarkable & impressive single chords occur in it, but, as a whole, it suggests nothing but cats in a gutter & pigs under a gate.”
