“Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon—Ritter symphony is not great. There is no fault to be found with it, to my knowledge, except that it is without a sign of life & inspiration. Beethoven’s Coriolanus overture—would there were more of it! Liszt’s ‘Poeme symphonique,’ or some such thing, is what one might expect. A barren programme. Dick [Richard Henry Derby], General Vinton, & a young daughter of John Taylor Johnston’s sat with us—as did also some unknown woman who marched into our box with such intrepidity, & took her seat with such aplomb, that no one ventured to ask her who she was or what she was doing there.”
