“Philharmonic rehearsal this p.m. In our box William Schermerhorn, young Bridgham, & [Darice?] Fanny his wife, Dick [Richard Henry Derby], Vinton, pretty Miss Nina French, etc. Of all four movements of the Eroica, I think I now most keenly enjoy the fourth—though I did not begin to understand it till after I had heard it many times. But all four are transcendent, & comparisons are odious. Nothing comes near this symphony except the C minor & no. 7, & perhaps—in a totally diverse style—Mozart’s Jupiter.”
