“Last evening ‘The Doctor of Alcantara’ was represented for the first time this season. Mr. Eichberg’s clever compilation—for ‘The Doctor of Alcantara’ is in no sense an original work—is a tuneful and vivacious operetta, which would bear far more frequent repetition than it has had since it was interpreted at the French Theatre, five or six years ago. Its amusing story and melodious score were dealt with very happily yesterday. Mr. Seguin’s company is much better fitted for rendering opera comique than for the exposition of the more trying compositions attempted until Friday. Little fault could be found with this latest representation. Miss Emma Howson sang the music allotted to Isabella with precision and taste; Mrs. Zelda Seguin captivated the audience equally by her singing and acting, and Mr. Edward Seguin supplied, as when ‘The Doctor of Alcantara’ was produced, a most elaborate and amusing picture of Doctor Parcelsus. The remaining roles were filled by [see above]. The performance was remarkably spirited, and elicited lively tokens of satisfaction from a very large audience.”

“Considering the season of the year and the quantity of opera that was given during the past season, the term was quite successful.”
