“Philharmonic rehearsal—Ellie, Lucy [Derby] & the three boys. Overture to Oberon came out magnificently. Beethoven himself could not have written that particular thing. The other two orchestral works are small beer in my judgment. At the directors’ meeting, after the rehearsal, we considered the expediency of suppressing that miserable, long-winded ‘Hirtengesang’ by Liszt, & reluctantly decided that we could not drop it after it had been produced at a public rehearsal. Its laborious inanity is exasperating. Souvenirs occur in it of the Pastorale in the Messiah, The Notturno in the Midsummer Night’s Dream, & that delectable melody of the ‘Carnival of Venice.’ Its production is a disgrace to the society.”
