Announcement: New York Herald, 01 February 1873, 5.

An account of the fall of an unruly horse into the orchestra pit, where he produced “a series of sounds that were probably the expression of equine amazement and dismay” during the remainder of the performance. The orchestra had “vanished like mice through the doors beneath the footlights, and the rider of the steed managed to escape unhurt.” “…how that horse was got out of the orchestra remains as much a mystery as how the apple gets into the pudding.”

Review: New York Clipper, 08 February 1873, 358.

Brief; no mention of music. “On Thursday evening, during the performance, one of the horses became unmanageable and backed off the stage into the orchestra. Neither the horse nor its rider was injured. Some little consternation was expressed by the musicians.”
