“Diligence downtown. Up early [back uptown] for Philharmonic rehearsal, & reveled in the glories of the C minor symphony, studying its details, & the lovely little finishing touches of color (especially) that are added by the wood instruments here & there. That symphony is like some pond or lake, full of microscopic marvels. One could hear it daily for ten years, without ceasing to wonder over its beauties, contrapuntal & aesthetic, & to discover new ones. Each is a treasure house of God’s works—the former of His direct works (trotz Darwin) or thoughts or conceptions—the latter of His works executed through a marvelous inspiration given by Him to man. There should be a Collect in the prayerbook of thanksgiving for the fifth symphony.”
