“Philharmonic rehearsal this afternoon. Schumann’s Overture, scherzo, & finale, & Rubinstein’s ‘Ocean Symphony.’ The latter may have some merit, in a small way, but there are more salt water & sea-breeze in one bar of Mendelssohn’s ‘Fingal’s Cave,’ than in all these six long movements together. Rubinstein must have been thinking of a six months’ voyage to China in an old-fashioned sailing vessel, when he wrote this most elongated symphony.”
