“The Philharmonic Society have shown that it is only necessary for a concert to be financially successful. Here are 100 instrumentalists playing together for twenty-five years and inspired only by the broad principles of art, with a conductor whose knowledge of the standard works and whose experience in leading a grand orchestra draw towards him a degree of interest from every musician, and the result is invariably a crowded house. Yesterday afternoon was no exception to the case. The last rehearsal for the first concert of the season then took place. To be sure, the appearance of Rubinstein was a special attraction. He played his fourth concerto (the one in which he made his début in this country), and he was cheered to the echo. To those who attend the concert this evening the playing of the great Russian pianist, with such a background as the Philharmonic orchestra, must prove a rare musical treat. Again he gave those wonderful ‘Preludes’ of Chopin, which may be regarded as the happiest conceptions of the poet of the piano. The orchestral works for the first concert are three in number—[see above].”
