"Before “The Lightning Express,” “Billy Carter had previously sung songs with banjo accompaniment and interluded with witticisms, which were fresh and excited much laughter. His performances were several times redemanded, and cheerfully accorded. The Raynor Brothers, attired as clowns, performed their musical specialties, consisting of a solo on the Chinese fiddle; a duet on the concertina and banjo; imitations of birds and church bells on the concertina; a duet on the toy concertina and banjo; playing an air on the concertina, using only one hand; a solo on a tin whistle, and concluding with a novel performance upon the same instrument. One of the brothers held the whistle, and an india [sic]-rubber tube, connecting with a pair of bellows held by the other, was attached to the mouthpiece. While one brother by working the bellows supplied the instrument with air, the other, by controlling the ventages, produced harmonious music. Their entire performances [sic] evinced proficiency and skill, and met with deserved favor…Miss Helene Smith in songs-and-dances; Johnny Queen as ‘The Dancing Octoroon;’ Master Barney in German songs…and others in the cast, filled out the programme, which attracted a liberal attendance.”
