“Philharmonic rehearsal, 2:30 p.m. With us, nice Miss Meta Renwick & Miss Lina Routh. Rubinstein’s symphony is not a picture, but great patches of crude color, without form & void, daubed on a palette. Here & there the painter has scratched a few vague outlines with the end of his little finger or of his dudeen. There is definite outline only in the 2nd scherzo & the finale.”
